Kayaking

December 25, 2007

Kayaking is one of the most popular extreme sports that we come across in the world. It involves using a kayak to move across a stream of water. Kayaking is very similar to Canoeing.

The only difference is that in a kayak, there is a closed cockpit and in the case of a canoe, the cockpit is open. Also, in kayaking, two bladed paddles are used and in canoeing, only a single bladed paddle is used.

Another difference is the way the kayakers sit in the seat. Kayakers sit on the bottom of the boat and they extend their legs out in front of them. Canoeists will sit on an elevated bench instead.
There are many kinds of Kayaking.

The most popular ones are Whitewater kayaking and Sea kayaking . Whitewater kayaking means taking a kayak down rapid moving streams of water like rivers. Sea kayaking involves taking kayaks out to open waters such as oceans or lakes.

Sea kayaking is also called Ocean kayaking. When people go for Sea kayaking, they need to cover a lot of miles a day and it goes on for several days. The popularity of kayaking has increased greatly since the 1990s and in the 21st century.
Kayaks can be classified into different types based on their use.

There are primarily five kinds of kayaks - whitewater, surf, touring/expedition, light touring/day tripping and general recreation.

There are also certain sub-classes that come below these classifications. A typical example is the fishing kayak is a kayak which is used for general recreation and which consists of features which make fishing easier.

Also, there are several levels of performance among these classifications which enable us to further differentiate the individual models of kayaks. The kayaks can also be classified based on their configurations.

There are two kinds - “sit on tops” and “cockpit style”.

In the first case, the kayakers sit on top of the kayak in an open area. In the latter, the kayakers sit with the legs and hips inside the kayak. Both configurations are used in the five general classifications of kayaks. Some of the kayaks include even a triple cockpit boats.
